Minority Leader James Beverly Issues Statement on Derek Chauvin Trial Verdict

ATLANTA – House Minority Leader James Beverly (D-Macon) today issued the following statement regarding the recent verdict for the Minnesota v. Derek Michael Chauvin criminal case:

“I feel a sense of relief and hope as the Chauvin case came to a close. I hope the decision can bring his family peace in this challenging time, but I hope it spurs those of us in office to do more to create an equitable system of justice across this country.

“To eliminate wrongful policing, especially against Black and brown people, we must call upon our local and national governing bodies to make changes in the policies and laws we, as citizens, vote for or against.

“We must continue to move our state and our nation in a direction that is intolerable to injustice anywhere. With this verdict, I am reminded that the arc of the universe is long; Tuesday, it seems to have bent toward justice.”

Representative James Beverly represents the citizens of District 143, which includes portions of Bibb County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2011 and currently serves as House Minority Leader. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and on the Ethics, Health & Human Services, Retirement, Rules, Small Business Development and Special Rules committees.
