Rep. James Burchett Named Chairman of the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative James Burchett (R-Waycross) as the Chairman of the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee. Rep. Burchett will also serve as a member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety, Special Committee on Access to the Civil Justice System and the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight and Transportation committees. He is also an Ex-Officio member of the Judiciary Committee.

“I am humbled and honored to serve the citizens of Georgia in this capacity,” said Rep. Burchett. “The House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee’s work is vital to Georgia’s continued success.”

The House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee has jurisdiction over legislation regarding criminal code and procedure, drug enforcement, sentencing, parole and pardons and immigration. Any legislation that carries a possibility for criminal penalties can be referred to the Judiciary Non-Civil Committee.

The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives.

Representative James Burchett represents the citizens of District 176, which includes all of Atkinson and Lanier counties and portions of Lowndes and Ware counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 and currently serves as Chair of the Judiciary Non-Civil Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety, Special Committee on Access to the Civil Justice System and the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight and Transportation committees. He is also an Ex-Officio member of the Judiciary Committee.
