Rep. Joyce Chandler Makes Georgians Aware of Breast Cancer Research Stamp

ATLANTA – As a part of the upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness month, State Representative Joyce Chandler (R-Grayson) wants to make all Georgians aware of the availability of the Breast Cancer Awareness stamps. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each stamp will go to help fund cancer research.

“It is important that everyone is aware that these stamps are available at their local postal office and I want to encourage people to go out and purchase them,” said Rep. Chandler. “By buying these Breast Cancer Awareness stamps each time you need postage, we are each able to do our part to help fund cancer research.”

Seventy percent of the net amount of money raised from the sale of the Breast Cancer Awareness stamps is given to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent is given to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense. As of October 2012, the stamp has raised over $76.3 million for breast cancer research.

The Breast Cancer Research First-Class Semipostal Stamp was issued on July 29, 1998 at a first day ceremony held in the White House. It was the first semipostal stamp in U.S. history.

Representative Chandler was inspired to spread awareness by one of her constituents, Mark Myers. Rep. Chandler met Myers at a recent Chamber meeting where the two discussed the importance of spreading the word about the Breast Cancer Awareness stamps. Mark Myers organized a campaign called Contract to Cure Cancer in which he promotes the purchase of Breast Cancer Awareness Stamps.

Governor Nathan Deal signed a proclamation declaring October 2013 as Breast Cancer Awareness month in Georgia. In his proclamation, Governor Deal also urges Georgians to spread breast cancer awareness through outreach, education, and screening programs.

Representative Joyce Chandler represents the citizens of District 105, which includes portions of Gwinnett County. She was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2012, and is currently serving on the Education, Juvenile Justice, and Regulated Industries committees.
