Rep. McLeod Continues Work to Mandate Early Childhood Education and Funding Across the State

ATLANTA – State Representative Donna McLeod (D-Lawrenceville) today announced her plans to continue her work on House Bill 71, legislation that would study the state’s education funding formula and the benefits of mandating pre-kindergarten and kindergarten education. Rep. McLeod made her announcement and discussed HB 71 during a press conference earlier today.

“We are looking to create a program that provides alternative student education funding for Georgians,” said Rep. McLeod. “By establishing standards that make funding transparent and setting a clear standard of education requirements, we are able to ensure all children across the state receive a sufficient and uniform education.”

House Bill 71 would authorize the State Board of Education to coordinate with the Office of Planning and Budget to establish a pilot program to explore an alternative student funding formula for Georgia schools. This pilot program would be implemented in up to six school systems across the state for four years to test funding formulas recommended by the 2015 Education Reform Commission, study the impact of funding Pre-K through the state budget, as well as study the benefits of mandatory Pre-K and kindergarten prior to first grade.

HB 71 was introduced during the 2021 legislative session and is eligible for consideration this session.
