Rep. Oliver Receives 2011 Conservation Legacy Award from Georgia Conservation Voters

ATLANTA – State Representative Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur) recently received a 2011 Environmental Leadership Award from Georgia Conservation Voters. Georgia Conservation Voters is a statewide non-partisan organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of all Georgians by making conservation issues a top priority with Georgia’s elected officials, political candidates and voters.

“One of Georgia’s strongest assets is our state’s natural beauty, which draws visitors from around the world,” said Rep. Oliver. “From our mountains to our coast, we must actively work to protect Georgia’s water, land, and air. As a legislator, I think that means promoting the use of renewable and cleaner energy sources.”

While 32 members of the Georgia House of Representatives and 14 members of the Georgia State Senate received a 2011 Environmental Leadership Award from Georgia Conservation Voters, Rep. Oliver received special recognition for her advocacy and was the only recipient of the Conservation Legacy Award.

“Representative Oliver has been a consistent champion for the protection of children, consumers, and our natural resources,” said Rob Teilhet, Executive Director of Georgia Conservation Voters. “Specifically, Representative Oliver has been active in working to keep air and water clean. Thanks to Representative Oliver’s leadership Georgia’s natural resources had a voice.”

Georgia Conservation Voters works with environmental and outdoor organizations across the state to develop shared legislative priorities each year. The legislators who received Environmental Leadership Awards were chosen based upon their votes and leadership on the common agenda.

During this year’s legislative session, Rep. Oliver introduced House Bill 43, environmental legislation designed to protect Georgia’s clean water and air resources from coal-fire power plant pollution. For more information on HB 43, please click here.

She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2002, plus five years previous service. She currently serves on the Appropriations, Governmental Affairs, Judiciary, and Science and Technology committees.
