Rep. Shaw Blackmon Named Chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative Shaw Blackmon (R-Bonaire) as the Chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee. Rep. Blackmon will also serve as a member on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Special Committee on Election Integrity, Economic Development & Tourism, Governmental Affairs, Insurance, Juvenile Justice, Rules, Special Rules and Small Business Development committees. He is also an Ex-Officio member of the House Appropriations Committee.

“I am humbled by Speaker Ralston’s confidence in me to chair this important committee,” said Rep. Blackmon. “I look forward to working with the other members of the committee as we have tough decisions and challenges ahead.”

The House Ways & Means Committee is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives. This committee derives a large share of its jurisdiction from the state Constitution which declares, “All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.”

The House Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), is charged with making all House committee assignments for the members of the Georgia House of Representatives.

Representative Shaw Blackmon represents the citizens of District 146, which includes portions of Houston County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 and currently serves as the Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Special Committee on Election Integrity, Economic Development & Tourism, Governmental Affairs, Insurance, Juvenile Justice, Rules, Special Rules and Small Business Development committees.
