Rep. Viola Davis Honors Life of Late Dr. Darren Harper

ATLANTA – State Representative Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) seeks to honor the life and memory of the late Dr. Darren Harper, a physician who specialized in family medicine and environmental health, through a special resolution. The special resolution honoring Dr. Harper will be delivered to his family during the memorial service on Sunday, September 25.

“Dr. Harper’s loss will certainly be felt for many years to come,” said Rep. Davis. “Dr. Harper was a faithful leader, dedicated servant and dear friend to his community, and he was a shining example to many aspiring family physicians at Morehouse School of Medicine. My deepest condolences and prayers go to Dr. Harper’s children and family.”

Dr. Harper dedicated his medical career to the health and well-being of his community for more than 30 years. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Harper received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his medical degree from SUNY Health Sciences Center at Syracuse. He completed his medical internship at Columbia University at Harlem Hospital and completed residency training in Family Medicine at SUNY Brooklyn/Kings County Hospital. He also held several leadership positions while practicing in New York.

In 2005, Dr. Harper relocated to Atlanta and joined Morehouse School of Medicine as the medical director of the Department of Family Medicine. He also taught family medicine as an assistant professor at the university for many years. Before his passing, Dr. Harper was actively engaged in community health and was a devoted member of Citizens for a Healthy and Safe Environment.

Dr. Harper’s wife, Janice Yvette Nichols Harper, preceded him in death. He is survived by his three children, Nia Zarina, Kamau Osei and Malik Shaka Idris.

            A memorial service will take place on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the First African Church in Stonecrest.

Representative Viola Davis represents the citizens of District 87, c includes portions of DeKalb County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and currently serves on the Natural Resources & Environment, Insurance, Interstate Cooperation and Science and Technology committees.
