Reps. Sharon Cooper, Scott Hilton and Sen. Billy Hickman to Hold Press Conference for Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities Advocacy Day

ATLANTA –State Representative Sharon Cooper (R-Marietta), along with State Representative Scott Hilton (R-Peachtree Corners) and State Senator Billy Hickman (R-Statesboro), will hold a press conference for the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities Advocacy Day on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, from 1 – 1:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Georgia State Capitol.

During the press conference, Rep. Cooper, Rep. Hilton and Sen. Hickman will discuss disability employment, ending subminimum wages and strategies to maintain Georgia’s status as a model employer in addition to House Bill 1125 and Senate Bill 384.

HB 1125 would eliminate the state Department of Labor’s authority to grant exemptions to minimum wage laws. Additionally, it would prohibit employers from using certificates issued by the U.S. Department of Labor to pay individuals with disabilities below the minimum wage.

SB 384 would provide for the development and administration of the State of Georgia as a Model Employer (GAME) Program for the recruitment, hiring, advancement and retention of qualified individuals.
