Rep. Al Williams Appointed to State’s Literacy Council, New House Water Access Study Committee

ATLANTA – State Representative Al Williams (D-Midway) was recently appointed by Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve as a member of the Georgia Council on Literacy and the House Study Committee on Fishing Access to Freshwater Resources.

“I want to thank Speaker Burns for entrusting me to serve on these official bodies that focus on two issues that directly impact my constituents,” said Rep. Williams. “I am excited to work with the Georgia Council on Literacy as we develop evidence-based literacy teaching plans, ensuring our young readers receive the best instruction possible. Additionally, countless freshwater ways wind through Liberty County, and the House Study Committee on Fishing Access to Freshwater Resources will help clarify how to deal with private landowners restricting access to these waterways.”

Created by Senate Bill 211, the Georgia Council on Literacy will conduct comprehensive reviews of birth to postsecondary programs, the alignment of state support for such programs and other issues related to improving the literacy outcomes of Georgia students.

The House Study Committee on Fishing Access to Freshwater Resources is tasked with examining the public’s right to fish in Georgia’s freshwater resources and any inconsistencies or conflicts in the law between the public’s right to fish and private property rights. Established by House Resolution 519, this study committee will conduct its work until the 2024 legislative session convenes next January. More information on this study committee can be found online here.

Representative Al Williams represents the citizens of District 168, which includes portions of Liberty County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 and currently serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety and the Defense & Veterans Affairs, Economic Development & Tourism, Game, Fish & Parks, Regulated Industries and Rules committees.
