ATLANTA – State Representative Billy Mitchell (D-Stone Mountain) today shared his support of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Rep. Mitchell expressed his support and discussed current legislative efforts to ratify the ERA during a press conference on Monday, January 13, 2020.
“While the fight to ratify the ERA should have ended years ago, it is one of my top priorities during the 2020 legislative session to make sure this issue is not forgotten,” said Rep. Mitchell. “I hope that my colleagues in the Georgia General Assembly will stand with me and help champion this important effort to make sure all people, regardless of their biological sex, are equally protected by the U.S. Constitution.”
During the press conference, Rep. Mitchell discussed House Resolution 16, which seeks to ratify the ERA. If ratified, the ERA would amend the U.S. Constitution to end discrimination on the basis of sex. Rep. Mitchell formally introduced HR 16 during the 2019 legislative session.
This resolution has been adopted by 37 states. If adopted, Georgia would be the 38th state to ratify this proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which would satisfy the two-thirds requirement to initiate the process ratifying the amendment. If the ratification process is initiated, it would take three-fourths of the states to officially ratify the amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
